Hello! I love Spring. It is such a beautiful season. I love to see the plants blooming and buds on the trees. I heard once that April showers bring May flowers. Today, my family used BookFlix from Scholastic to watch the story, Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert. Did you know that Lois not only wrote the words but also made the illustrations? That means she is an author and an illustrator. It was wonderful to see her work come alive in the story. After reading the books, my family discussed what types of flowers they saw in the story. They compared and contrasted the different flowers. They talked about how the flowers were alike and how they were different. They looked at the color, size, leaf and shape. Next they got out the Play-doh and created their own garden. Each family member created a flower. Then they put their flower on a sheet of paper where they labeled the different parts of the flower: the petals, leaves and the stems. Next they put their flowers together in a garden and took a picture of their creations before putting the Play-doh away. Do you have a garden at your house? We do! Thought I am not sure what my family grows in it. Perhaps food for their favorite pet? Learn more about author/illustrator, Lois Ehlert here. Did you know that she is from Wisconsin? In fact she lives in Milwaukee. Below is an interview with Lois discussing her love of art. Stay well, Tulip

This week, my family has challenged each other to do one kind thing a day for another person. Over the week, I have seen the oldest help the youngest sew a bag using left over material and thread. I have seen the two girls play together without fighting. I saw Mr. Harden stop and make sure that his family is ok and exercise with his family even when he did not want to. I also saw Mrs. Harden put down the computer and focus more on her family. This reminds me of a book. Have you read the book Wonder? The central theme of the book, Wonder, by RJ Palacio is kindness. It is about a 10 year old boy goes to school for the first time. The young man, Auggie, has a facial disformity and has had over twenty-five surgeries. The fictional story focuses on his journey in school and the struggles he faces on a daily basis. Listen here to what inspired the author (the person who writes the words) to write this book. RJ Palacio has also been reading the book aloud and answering questions via Twitter #WONDERreadaloud. What can you do to be kind for another person? Below is an inspirational video. Stay well, Tulip #Choosekind Brad Meltzer is an author. Do you remember what an author is? Yep, the person who writes the words in a books. Last week, PBS Kids shared a live event on their Facebook page of author Brad Meltzer reading his book, I am Amelia Earhart. During the live event, which is now saved on the PBS Kids Facebook Page (@PBSKids), Brad shared some behind the scenes secrets to the books. I am Amelia Earhart is part of Brad's series called "Ordinary People Change the World". This is a series of biographies for kids. Do you know what the word biography means? It means a book written about a real person. The person may be alive or passed away. They do not have to be famous. You could write a biography about your parents, or your aunt, or your neighbor, about your teacher or even about our principal, Mr. Burns. The youngest in our family was studying biographies in her class and was even preparing for a wax museum where the speakers dress up like their people and showcase the amazing attributes, characteristics and share information about them with an audience. The youngest was studying Ameila Earhart. PBS turned Brads series into an animated cartoon on PBS Kids. It stars three friends who travel through time to meet famous people throughout history. It is pretty interesting! On the PBS Kids website you can watch videos, play games and print activities. Check out PebbleGo Next for even more biographies, science and social studies. Below you will find a youtube video of Brad sharing his story. - Know No Bounds Stay well, Tulip |
