Here is fun and short activity that Mrs. Harden did with the girls. 1. Find a book 2. On a piece of paper write the title and the author (remember, the author writes the words) of the book 3. Write on the paper if the books is fiction (made up story) or nonfiction 4. Finally, draw a picture inspired by the book When Mrs. Harden did this with the girls, the youngest go so caught up with answering the questions and finding her inspiration for her drawing she read the whole book! When Mrs. Harden asked her if her books was fiction or nonfiction she answered fiction. Mrs. Harden asked her how she knew and she pointed to the spine label on the library book (FIC KIN). Stay well, Tulip Happy Memorial Day! According to PebbleGo, Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday in May and it is a day of remembering and honoring United States soldiers who lost their lives fighting for our country. Mrs. Harden had the girls learn more about the holiday by visiting PebbleGo. Not only were they able to learn about the holiday by listening and reading but they were also able to watch a video and complete an activity. Their pictures of the United States flag turned out pretty nice. Stay well, Tulip My family says the school year is almost done. Even though the school buildings are closed the learning continues and the Hamilton/SOTA I Virtual Library is always open. There are games, activities, reading and more just for you! Next week, Mr. and Mrs. Harden are going to their respective schools to help with instrument, iPad, and book collection along with student pick up personal items left at the school. Mrs. Harden said that some students checked out over ten books before they left school in mid-March. Wow, that is a lot of reading. Do you know where your books are? Can you put them in a special place to have them ready for collection on May 26th and May 27th? Just come to the school one of these dates with your books and a staff member will collect your library books curbside. You don't even have to get out of the car. Once collected, Mrs. Harden and Mrs. Johnson are putting the books in a quarantine so they don't transmit any of they yucky virus. Then they will check them in and place them on the shelf. The books will be waiting on the shelf for your , ready for your return to school. Just because you have returned your library books, doesn't mean you have to stop reading. You can read ebooks via MackinVia or TumbleBooks all at home. You can even read the back of your cereal box while you are eating or read the directions to the shampoo bottle while you wash your hair. Reading and learning never ends! Stay well, Tulip More and more I am seeing my family on their electronic devices. Morning, noon and night I catch someone on an iPad, computer or phone. That makes me worried. Are they making good choices when using the technology? Are they sharing private information? Are they being a good digital citizen? A good digital citizen is one who is a safe Internet user—it’s about being responsible, smart, and having respect for yourself and others when using electronic devices. I know that Mrs. Harden is very proactive with the girls and make sure they balance their time on their devices but it can still be hard learning virtually on devices. We need to Pause and Think Online and use technology responsibly! Keeping in mind our digital footprints and not sharing personal information with others. Stay well, Tulip Today, Mrs. Harden and the girls worked together to create a I Spy picture featuring Mrs. Harden's Bitmoji. It was wonderful to see and hear them come up with ideas to incorporate into the picture. They each took turns deciding what went into the picture next and where to place it. The picture was created all in Google Slides with pictures found online through the image search and Mrs. Harden Bitmoji.
They hid ten items in the picture. Can you find them all?
Stay well, Tulip Become a reporter for a day! Today's activity is from the Center For Cyber Safety and Education. It is all about reporting on good and bad behavior when using electric devices (focusing on the good). First the girls created press passes. Mrs. Harden told the girls to get creative. She encouraged them to make up a professional name or media organization. Once they were done creating their press passes they taped it to their shirts and they were ready to complete the interviews. Next the both girls got notepads and pen. They each had to ask each family member two questions forcing on being safe while using the Internet. Questions included: 1. How do you use the internet? 2. What do you like about the internet? 3. How do you stay safe and secure online? Mrs. Harden then asked the girls to think about the answers they received. Finally based on their reflections, they created their own news report. Super fun and informative. It is important to make a good choices when using electronic devices even for moms and dads. Stay well, Tulip Mrs. Harden found the above Emoji Pictionary based on children's books on Facebook one day. She shared it with the girls and the the family had a fun time figuring out all 15 children's books. They were successful with a little help from Mrs. Harden. Can you figure out all of the stories? Let us know in the comments!
Challenge: Can you write your own emoji picture book title? Stay Well, Tulip Today the family watched/read the story, Earthrise: Apollo 8 and the Photo that Changed the World written by James Gladstone and illustrated by Christy Lundy. You can check out the book here via TumbleBooks. (Login: hamiltonwi Password: reads) Make sure that you watch all the way to the end notes to learn more about the photograph. You may not know this but Mr. Harden is a huge space buff and actually met Jim Lovell. Even though it looks likes a storybook is is all based on real events. This means it is a nonfiction book. PBS put a wonderful video documentary together. Click here to watch a snippet of the documentary. This chapter is called, "Capturing Earthrise" from Apollo 8". The quotes from the documentary describing the photographic are simply beautiful: "Most of all we learned about a new way to learn about the Earth." "Closeness of our humanity." "Unifying experience." "We are all on this spaceship together." Stay well, Tulip Have you ever been to an escape room? As we are all staying at home to be safe, Mrs. Harden, Mrs. Nugent, Ms. Wakeen, and Mr. Hamby decided to make their own version of an escape room but digitally. You can complete this escape room as a group or as an individual. You can compete against friends and try it multiple times. Just make sure you have fun!
Check it out here. Stay well, Tulip |
