No library lesson, per say, today as my family is turning off electronics and enjoying a technology filled day. With so much going on with school it is nice to take a break and just enjoy each other's company. The family plans to go for a picnic, play board games and perhaps some light cleaning. My best to you and yours.
Stay well, Tulip Today, Mrs. Harden asked the girls to be inspired by a true story, based on a first hand account of the first automobile trip across the United States. After enjoying the Tumblebook, Jackson and Bud's Bumpy Ride, written by author Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff and illustrated by Wes Hargis, the family chartered Dr. Horatio Jackson's trip across the United States from San Fransisco, California to New York, New York. They plotted their trip and talked about different sites to see along the way and discussed how long it would take them to travel across our country. If you wanted you could even take it one step farther and continue planning the virtual trip by using Google Maps and discuss the how long the family would travel in a day and what places would be fun to stop and visit. Would you camp along the way or perhaps stay in a hotel? Travel planning can be so much fun! Stay well, Tulip My family loves to read and I am sure that you do also! Are you ready to get some new library books? If you answered yes, you are in luck. I overheard Mrs. Harden talking about LibraryDASH. This is curbside pick up (outside of the school) of library books. Students need to order books. Once the library staff receive their order they get the books ready. Once the books are ready they send an email to the student. The student completes the form telling library staff when they will be picking up the books. It is that easy! How exciting! I can't wait for my family to order some books! Check out the trailer video below that highlights this new service. Students should be learning more information about LibraryDASH in their classes as Mrs. Harden created videos for the teachers to share. Below is a snapshot of the new program. Stay well, Tulip Join Mrs. Harden each school day at noon for a Live Virtual Storytime. Listen to stories via Zoom. It is so fun not only for the students but for Mrs. Harden. Make sure to pop in any school day at noon.
Stay well, Tulip Have you ever heard of the Library of Congress? It is located in Washington DC. Their website says that they are the largest library in the world and online. They have an amazing amount of resources. This includes; images that you are free to use and reuse (just remember to give proper credit), digital collections, and so much more! They even have author visits and concerts. Make sure to check them out! The National Book Festival will be held digitally this year. Over a hundred authors will participate in the event including author, Jason Reynolds. He is the 2020-2021 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, started writing poetry when he was 9 years old. A few years ago he even visited La Crosse and spoke at our High Schools and Middle Schools. Last year Mrs. Harden, Mrs. Nugent, Ms. Wakeen, and Mr. Hamby created a digital escape room that featured the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress has also been showcased in movies, books and TV series. I have heard that the Library of Congress is an amazing place to visit in person and virtually. Perhaps some day my family will take me there? Stay well, Tulip Today Mrs. Harden and the girls visited Storyline Online it is a fun website where actors and actress read books to their viewers. The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Daytime Emmy®-nominated and award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online®, streams videos readers include Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine, Kristen Bell, Rita Moreno, Viola Davis, Jaime Camil, Kevin Costner, Lily Tomlin, Sarah Silverman, Betty White, Wanda Sykes and dozens more Mrs. Harden and the girls listed to the book, "Arnie the Doughnut" written and illustrated by Laurie Keller. After watching, she told the girls that they were going to work on sequencing. I had no idea what that meant, thankfully she explained that sequencing was putting things in order. In this case they were going to put the events of the story in order. She had the girls retell Arnie's story and as they said a part of the story she wrote it down a card. For example, Arnie was placed in a bag. She then mixed up the cards and asked the girls to put them in the correct sequence. The girls said that it was like putting a puzzle together making sure each event of the story was in its right spot and in the right order! Have fun and stay well, Tulip Today I learned that tomorrow, Tuesday, September 15th is International Dot Day. It is a day of creativity, courage, collaboration. According to the International Dot Day site, "The Dot tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Peter’s book, the teacher dares a very resistant Vashti to “make her mark.” Vashti’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper. Encouraged by her teacher she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, letting her creativity bloom and, ultimately, inspire others." So what should we do? First, watching/reading The Dot on Tumblebooks (login: hamiltonwi password:reads). Next be inspired! You can wear dots, paint dots, celebrate dots, affix dots, connect the dots, or try something new. Perhaps you follow in Vashti's (the main character in the book) steps and create your own dot artwork. Don't forget to sign your work of art. Be proud! You can also frame your work and display it. Don't forget to share your creativity with others. I would love to see what you created! #DotDay Stay well, Tulip It is Friday! YEAH! It is the start of a wonderful weekend. What will you do? My suggestion, check out Dav Pilkey at Home: https://kids.scholastic.com/kids/books/dav-pilkey-at-home/ Dav is the author and illustrator of Captain Underpants, Dog Man, Cat Kid, Big Dog, Little Dog and so many more awesome titles. On the site you can read, watch, create and play all courtesy of the Library of Congress (the largest library in the United States) and Scholastic. Or check out Dav's website to learn more about him, his books and a multitude of additional fun things to do. As Dav Pilkey says, "Reading Gives You Super Powers!" I, Tulip the Bunny, challenge you to design your own cape or other Dav Pilkey activity and share it with Mrs. Harden on the Hamilton/SOTA I Library Facebook page or via email. Stay well, Tulilp Mrs. Harden has been hard at work at home and at school. One new task that she has taken on is school-wide announcements. The first announcement feature a very special guest, Mr. Burns. The announcements will feature additional special guests, jokes, fun facts and so much more. The announcements can be found on Mrs. Harden's Youtube Page. Many of the wonderful Hamilton/SOTA I teachers have been sharing them with their classes. Check out today's announcements below. Stay well, Tulip |
