Mrs. Harden subscribes to the PBS Kids Newsletter via email. The newsletters include activities, tips, crafts and more. She found the following information from PBS Kids for Parents Newsletter email:
Being kind is a skill that we can practice just like math, science, or reading. It starts by helping our children recognize when a friend or family member is upset or needs help. We can encourage kind behavior by suggesting ways to be kind and compassionate — and make the situation better. Start family discussions around kindness and compassion with discussion questions like:
How can you be kind to others? How can you make a difference in someone's life? Stay well, Tulip Be inspired by your creativity! At our home the girls love to create with Legos, tiles, cardboard, yarn and more. You name it and they love to make things with it. With the falling leaves in the front and back yards, Mrs. Harden decided to ask the girls to get creative and make something with the Autumn leaves.
The youngest Harden decided to paint the leaves and create a collage with them. The oldest Harden decided to create jewelry with the leaves. She made bracelets and crowns for the whole family. What will you create? After you create your masterpiece I encourage you to write three sentences about your creation and share it with a friend. Stay well, Tulip We are lucky enough to enjoy all four seasons here in our hometown. The Harden family loves fall! Mrs. Harden found that there was a fun update to the Khan Academy Kids app. The update includes fall themed books, activities, and more! Khan Academy even created a weekly fall planner, “Week of Fall Fun”. The planner is full of activities that families can follow to help keep kids learning as the seasons turn. The planner can be found here: The link is in English and Spanish and is divided by ages.
You can even create your own planner, if you would prefer, to create your own schedule, Weekly Planner. Feel free to mix and match activities based on what works best for your family. The Khan Academy Kids App can be found in Self Service. It does require a Khan Kids account (either a class code or parent email). The accounts are free. Happy Fall and stay well, Tulip We love listening to audiobooks at our house. Everyone has a story that they are listening to currently. The family loves listening to stories read by narrators while driving in the car, cleaning the house or even when playing outside! The other day, Mrs. Harden was reading an article from School Library Journal. As soon as she read it, she shared it with the family! It was all about scary podcasts. Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines podcast as, "a program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the Internet." Podcasts allow listeners to learn and grow as podcasts can be found in a variety of subject matters.
Do you like spooky and scary stories? Do you like to read and listen to stories that go bump in the night? Check out the list from School Library Journal! Most stories are approved for children 8 and up. I hope that you find a SPOOK-TACULAR tale to listen to! Stay well, Tulip While at school cleaning up the library books, she found this fun book by Betsy Franco with illustrations by Steven Salerno. The book is full of fun poems to tickle your math funny bone. The author says, "Mathematickles! is a brain tickler. It teases your brain by missing together math and language...Once you've read this book, I bet you won't be able to resist writing a few math poems of your own." Are you ready? Let's get started! crisp air shadows tall + cat's thick coat _________________ signs of fall Here is another: holes + nuts - nuts = squirrel hide & seek And a last one: Pumpkin patch x sunlight = oooooooooooooooooorange! I invite you to do like the author suggests and write a few math poems of your own! I would love to hear them. Stay well, Tulip
Ebooks and audiobooks are so popular right now especially as the school building is closed. I love Tumblebooks for reading and watching animated books! I see my family watching and listening to them all of the time. More than one person can even enjoy the same title at the same time and be in different parts of the book! From the Tumblebooks website, "Tumblebooks, animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they'll love. They are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sounds, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book (and some classics) which you can read, or have read to you." There is a link on the students' iPad directly to Tumblebooks. Which makes logging in a breeze! Stay well, Tulip Today starts our 6th week of school. The week starts with parent teacher conferences. Mrs. Harden has been hard at work recording lessons for the students to teach them about how to use devices appropriately, our online card catalog, and ebooks. This week I am going to feature three of her lessons just in case you missed them. Today's lesson is all about the iPad. Enjoy! We are big fans of PBS Kids at our house! Odd Squad is a family favorite. There are some great PBS apps found in Self Service. You can watch videos on the PBS KIDS Video app and play educational games on the PBS Kids Games app. One of our family favorites is PBS KIDS Scratch Jr. We love to code the different characters. You can make different scenes and write your own story with the app all through creative coding. You can even make your own interactive games using the app. Simply snap together programming blocks to make your favorite PBS Kids characters move, talk, dance and even sing!
